Eyelid Surgery
As we age, much of the aging process becomes visible in our eyelids. The upper eyelid area is influenced by both the loosening of upper eyelid skin as well the eyebrows falling with age. The brow area, particularly on the outside edges of our face, falls down, resulting in excessive skin around the eyelids. The lower eyelids typically age by accumulating wrinkles, becoming puffy, or looking more drawn as the tissues of the cheek area descend. This can result in us looking tired, sad, or even angry.
For women and men looking to correct these problems, eyelid surgery may help restore youth and create a brighter, happier appearance. Benefits
Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, may significantly help Michigan women and men improve their appearance and restore youth to their eye area. Revitalizing the eye area may:
- Create a more youthful and energetic appearance
- Lift heavy eyelids
- Reduce puffiness in lower lids
- Smooth wrinkles
During your consultation with Dr. Malhotra, you can discuss your specific goals, and he will recommend either upper or lower eyelid surgery, or possibly even a combination of both. This procedure may also be combined with BOTOX® or injectable fillers for optimal facial rejuvenation.
Insider Tips
Below are just a few tips for your eyelid surgery:
- There is an art to eyelid surgery. This requires evaluating the eyelid and eyebrow complex as a whole. Some patients may need a brow lift in addition to eyelid surgery.
- Avoid the surprised look. This is best avoided by only elevating the outer half of the brow. We use a special lateral brow lift technique to achieve this.
- Discuss with your doctor if you have dry eyes. Your surgery can be fine-tuned to account for this.
- Lower eyelid surgery can cause prolonged bruising. Talk with your doctor about his expectations for bruising of the lower eyelids.
- This procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. This is generally more comfortable for patients.
Candidates
Candidates for eyelid surgery typically have bags under the lower eyelids, redundant eyelid skin, and a tired appearance to the eyes. In addition, candidates have a realistic expectation of what eyelid surgery can do for them.
General Procedure
Eyelid surgery can be performed under local sedation or general anesthesia. Incisions for this procedure are made in the natural wrinkle lines above the upper eyelid or in the lower eyelid hidden just underneath the eyelash line. Skin, muscle and sometimes fat are removed or contoured.
Recovery Process
Patients typically will have some bruising. Time off from work varies between 3 to 8 days depending on the patient. Exercise should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks following your procedure.
