Liposuction: Insider Tips from the Surgeons at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery

There are many options for body contouring including both surgical and non-surgical treatments. Ask your surgeon about the choices for body contouring, including power-assisted liposuction or abdominoplasty, and about non-surgical liposuction alternatives.

Liposuction only removes fat, not extra skin. If you have loose skin, you may need a procedure that provides surgical skin removal in addition to fat removal. For loose skin in the abdominal area, the tummy tuck along with liposuction re-establishes a flatter stomach.

A skilled plastic surgeon removes moderate quantities of fat while leaving some behind. Fat creates contours, essential for natural-looking results. An inexperienced surgeon may remove too much fat for a less than satisfactory result. Drs. Malhotra and Ballard have performed many successful body contouring procedures and are among the best liposuction surgeons in Michigan.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction removes fat from the body through small incisions using suction. Diet and exercise shrink fat cells, while liposuction removes them. This treatment is highly targeted, focusing its fat-reducing efforts on specific areas of the body like the abdomen, love handles, or under the chin.

The benefits of this procedure include:

  • Target and remove fat from trouble spots
  • Clothing fits better
  • Versatile, can be performed various areas of the body
  • Enhance and sculpt for better body contours
  • Immediate results that continue to improve as swelling subsides

Our Michigan plastic surgery specialists understand that the difference is in the details when it comes to achieving your desired results. Visit Dr. Malhotra and Dr. Ballard at our Ann Arbor or Jackson locations to learn more.

What Happens During a Liposuction Procedure?

We typically perform this procedure at an outpatient surgical center. In certain situations,  however, we may be able to perform very focused liposuction to a small area of the body in the office setting. A basic liposuction procedure is performed by making small incisions, inconspicuously placed near the treatment locations. A cannula, or metal tube, is inserted into these incisions. Suction is then applied and fat is removed.

After liposuction, you are placed into a compression garment or binder over the surgical site. This bandaging helps to retain contours and reduce swelling during healing. Most patients require between 2-7 days off from work for recovery.

High-Definition Liposuction in Michigan

High-definition liposuction (also referred to as high-def lipo or HD lipo) is a newer iteration of liposuction designed to achieve a highly precise body contouring result. Whereas traditional liposuction also removes unwanted fat, high-def lipo aims to provide someone who is at their ideal weight with the most sculpted and toned appearance possible. Once the fat cells are targeted, destroyed, and flushed out of your system, you should expect to see dramatic results and enjoy a sculpted appearance far superior to results from diet, exercise, or other body contouring procedures. If you are searching for high-definition liposuction in Ann Arbor, we invite you to review our high-def lipo before and after pictures or schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons to learn more.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

PAL makes fat removal more efficient and effective by using a small motor device to loosen and dislodge fat. PAL is less invasive for the patient, resulting in a faster recovery. It is safer, more efficient, and gentler than traditional liposuction. Prior to liposuction, your surgeon will inject a special solution called tumescent that leads to easier fat removal. The tumescent solution has anesthetic properties, too, providing pain relief during and after the procedure.

Liposuction FAQs

Procedure costs vary significantly across the state, and even from one provider to another in Ann Arbor, MI. Plastic surgery isn’t an area to price-shop. Look for a highly-skilled plastic surgeon with hospital privileges for the best results. We’ll give you detailed pricing information during your consultation.

This treatment isn’t the cure for obesity nor is it an alternative to diet and exercise. We recommend that patients lose weight first and then turn to body contouring to shape and enhance your final contour. Ideal candidates for this procedure are within 30 pounds of their goal weight.

Patients may lose a few pounds from liposuction once the swelling resolves, but the lasting effects of the procedure come from fat loss, not weighing less. As we remove fat cells from your trouble spots, we’ll unveil new and improved body contours. This refined shape is much more valuable and long-lasting than a few lost pounds.

The body maintains a fairly stable number of fat cells throughout adulthood. Liposuction removes fat cells, permanently reducing the number of fat cells in the treated areas. These fat cells are permanently gone, but you can still gain and lose weight. For the best results, remain at a stable weight after treatment as large fluctuations in either direction can change the contours we create during the surgery.

Liposuction is an ideal complement to many of our procedures. Ask our surgeons for a personalized treatment recommendation! One example of a favorite pair-up with this procedure is breast augmentation, during which we can perform liposuction to the axillary area to refine your results.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure and some soreness and tenderness are expected after treatment. We use anesthetic during liposuction to ensure a comfortable procedure and to aid with fat extraction. We also use anesthesia for sedation. The pain control from the surgical anesthetic usually lasts 12 hours after surgery. We will discuss a pain control plan with you to optimize your experience.
