How long have doctors been using breast implants?
Women have been seeking to enhance the size and shape of their chests via breast augmentation in Michigan—and around the world—for much longer than silicone breast implants have been available. Early attempts to enhance bust sizes involved padded bras and other external efforts, though more involved breast enhancement efforts soon developed.
Prior to 1900, women increased the size of their breasts with injections of paraffin, a wax frequently used in the production of candles. In the early 1900s, doctors began efforts to use fat taken from elsewhere in the body, including transferring a lipoma, or fatty growth, from one part of the body to another. In the 1950s, basic attempts at breast implants included polymers, sponges, wooden implants, and balls made of glass, ivory, or even wool.
Then, in the early 1960s, Drs. Frank Gerow and Thomas Cronin developed the first silicone implants for breast enlargement, working with a patient in Texas who had coincidentally been seeking tattoo removal, but agreed to try the new implants. Dr. Cronin presented his findings in 1963 at the International Society of Plastic Surgeons in Washington, D.C., and the rest is literally history. Saline implants were then developed in the 1960s.
Since then, the field of breast surgery has grown considerably, and breast implants are a popular and safe choice frequently made by women around the world. Common implant materials still include silicone and saline, each of which carries its own unique benefits.
Breast Augmentation in Michigan Today
About 50 years ago, women had few options when it came to breast augmentation. Now, there are multiple implant types, as well as breast enlargement techniques to choose from. Dr. Pramit Malhotra encourages women to take advantage of the full selection of implants available to make a choice that suits them best. With so many decisions to make—even in terms of size alone—the number of factors can seem overwhelming, but Dr. Malhotra will serve as an experienced guide to navigate through the breast enhancement process. He suggests that women first find images of breasts that they themselves find attractive. This can help narrow down the field. Next, once a size is selected, he recommends that women wear a bra accommodating implants of that chosen size, so the wearer can get a sense of the feel of the new chest, as well as what her new profile might look like.
During the breast augmentation surgery itself, Michigan’s Dr. Malhotra further ensures that the ideal implant size has been chosen by employing what is known as a sizer, which allows more of a glimpse into how the new implants will look in terms of volume.
Dr. Malhotra’s ultimate goal with each breast augmentation is to give the patient the size increase she wants, as well as for the results to be natural looking. The last 50 years have brought considerable changes and advances to the world of plastic surgery, especially in the field of breast implant surgery.
