Q & A with Dr. Ballard

I grew up in the small town of Decatur, Indiana, surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

I am a first-generation college student and attended DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. I then went directly to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN. Nashville was a wonderful place to spend 4 years learning medicine! I returned closer to home to complete my plastic surgery training at the University of Michigan, where I spent 7 years honing my skills before finally completing training with a 6-month cosmetic fellowship in Chicago.

I specialize in facial and body plastic surgery procedures. My niche procedures currently are eyelid surgeries, facelifts, tummy tucks/mommy makeovers, and labiaplasties.

Our overall practice philosophy is “the difference is in the details.” Personally, I take this very seriously as I do believe that the fine details regarding surgical planning and execution of an operation lead to major differences in the results that a patient experiences.

I became a plastic surgeon because I love the challenge of being able to operate from head to toe and tailoring every patient’s surgical plan to their desired result. There is no one size fits all in plastic surgery, and it is a unique field in which I can be artistic yet exact.

I really enjoy taking care of patients, and I love operating. I do my best to make sure every one of my patients knows that no matter what, I want to do what is best for them and get them the results they expect. I am never happy until they are happy!

Dedication, endless hours studying, and focusing on my goals were my main recipe for success. I was unwavering in my pursuit of getting a scholarship to attend college and then spent as many hours at the library that were necessary to perform at the top of my class to get into medical school. But don’t worry, I managed to have a little fun along the way!

My leisure time is spent with my young children and husband. These days, that means doing a lot of coloring, sidewalk chalk, and building blocks. I also like to bake and decorate my house.

During my plastic surgery residency, I realized that I really enjoyed aesthetic surgery because it demands near perfection and really listening and paying attention to what patients want. This really appealed to my perfectionist-tendencies and has been a wonderful career to date.

Plastic surgery residency is long and grueling. There were plenty of late nights on call where I questioned if surgery was the right field, but fortunately those moments quickly passed. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else for a career.

Mother, loyal, and kind

Dr. Malhotra, my partner at AAPS, has been a trusted voice of guidance and wisdom since day one. My two co-chiefs from residency and I also keep in touch and review cases intermittently. I also attend University of Michigan Plastic Surgery events whenever possible and will always be appreciative of the outstanding training I received there.

I am more comfortable with setting boundaries and not being afraid to say no.

Patients choose me as their plastic surgeon because they trust my guidance and know that I am not just trying to “sell” them a surgery. At the end of the day, safety is my number one priority and I am uncompromising in ensuring my patients will have the best outcome possible.
