What Is Renuvion?

Renuvion is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure to tighten loose skin in the neck, chin, and jawline to improve the appearance of facial contours and overall skin appearance. Whereas facelifts tighten one’s appearance by treating structures beneath the skin, Renuvion treats the skin directly for a smoother, more radiant look without incisions. As such, Renuvion is the first major advancement of facial skin treatments in decades, and it offers dramatic, natural-looking results for our patients.

Renuvion non-surgical skin tightening treatment precisely targets and treats specific areas of skin with noticeable effects immediately following the first treatment. Optimal Renuvion results are visible approximately six to nine months after your procedure as it stimulates collagen production for overall skin enhancements.

The Renuvion device uses radiofrequency and helium gas to create cold plasma energy. This generates energy that contracts the skin to tighten it. The Renuvion energy is applied underneath the skin, heating collagen and other structures to produce optimal contraction. By stimulating collagen, Renuvion’s efforts gradually improve skin’s overall health and appearance while also rejuvenating and tightening skin immediately for a more sculpted facial appearance.

Renuvion treatments can tighten loose skin with:

  • Small incisions
  • Little to no scarring
  • Minimal downtime
  • Slight discomfort

Renuvion can also be partnered with body contouring procedures to tighten the skin after surgery, including:

With many skin rejuvenation and body contouring treatments available, our board-certified expert plastic surgeons will listen to understand your aesthetic goals and recommend the appropriate treatments and procedures that will help you achieve your desired results effectively and safely, making them one of the best Renuvion providers in Michigan.

How Does Renuvion Work?

The Renuvion device is passed under the skin using small incisions.  It uses helium gas, which contacts the nearest tissues, which include the skin, fascia, and fibroseptal network.  It then heats the helium gas using a radiofrequency current to create a form a energy called plasma.

This generates momentary heat up to 85˚C- the optimal temperature to achieve maximal soft tissue contraction. It does this denaturing collagen- stimulating your body to build new collagen and your skin and soft tissues to contract over time. Even better, the technology allows a return to baseline skin temperatures in under one second! Other radiofrequency and skin tightening devices cannot heat and cool the tissue this quickly. This means they either reach a lower maximal temperature (meaning less skin contraction) or they take so long to reach desired temperatures that they increase the risk of a burn on the skin. Renuvion is truly a revolutionary technology that allows you to see the maximal benefit in a very safe manner!

What Are the Benefits of Renuvion?

First and foremost, it helps tighten loose skin.  Usually this is done in combination with liposuction, but can also be a standalone procedure. In fact, it has been shown to increase skin contraction but 30% more compared to liposuction alone!  Why is this important? It is means you will get better results with your liposuction, with less chance of hanging or uneven skin.  Also, while excisional techniques such as Tummy Tuck are the gold standard when there is a lot of loose skin, it may mean some patients can have a procedure such as liposuction combined with the Renuvion to minimize or even avoid long scars!  Take a look at the video below to see an illustration of how the technology works:

Where Can Renuvion Be Used?

Renuvion can be used most places in the body to help to tighten loose skin, as well as combined with liposuction to reduce the volume of fat in stubborn areas and then contract the skin. It is commonly used in the neck and chin area, where it is the only FDA approved device for skin contraction of this area.  Other common areas where it is used include the abdomen, flanks, arms, thighs, and back to help slim and contour the body without the need for long scars.

Who Are Good Candidates for Renuvion?

Renuvion candidates are healthy patients who are concerned about mild sagging skin on their neck or other areas of the body. Other good options are patients who are interested liposuction who may be at risk of loose skin after the procedure and are looking for an effective alternative to long scars.  Our surgeons can help to guide you as to whether you would be a good candidate at your consultation.

Our expert surgeons typically recommend candidates for Renuvion procedures should:

  • Be non-smokers, or willing to quit prior to your procedure
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Live a healthy lifestyle and be close to your ideal weight
  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook
  • Understand the procedural risks

Can It Be Combined with Other Procedures?

In short, yes!  In fact, it is almost always done in combination with some element of Liposuction but is also frequently combined with other procedures including Breast Fat Transfer, Brazilian Butt Lift, Tummy Tuck, PowerTuck, Male Breast Reduction, and a number of other body contouring and facial rejuvenation procedures. The possibilities are endless!

When Can I Expect to See the Results?

While there is some immediate contraction of tissues during the procedure, the maximal results will be typically be seen 6-9 months after the procedure.  This is because the body must form new collagen and elastin to tighten the skin and this process takes time to fully develop.  The good news is, that although you have to wait to see the effect, you should be able to enjoy the benefits for many years afterwards!

What Is the Recovery for Renuvion?

There is minimal recovery for the Renuvion itself.  There may some mild redness and discomfort to the skin for the first few days, as well as some mild swelling.  Due to the helium gas, it is not uncommon to have a crackling/popping sensation under the skin for a few days.  The medical term for this is crepitus and it from remnant helium gas under the skin that your body will absorb shortly after surgery.  However, since it is typically combined with other procedures, the recovery and downtime is primarily due to the other procedures such as liposuction or breast fat transfer, for example. There is therefore typically no extra downtime or recovery by adding Renuvion to these procedures so it is really a win-win for you!

What Are the Risks of Renuvion?

Complications are rare after Renuvion. According to available data, they occur only 0.04% of the time, making it one of the safest skin tightening technologies on the market (in addition to being the most effective!).  It is typical to have temporary redness or pigment changes to the skin, mild swelling, and crepitus immediately after the procedure.  The rare but more serious risks include burns, nerve injury, prolonged pigment changes to the skin, bleeding, infection, tissue ischemia, fibrosis or scarring.

I Found Warnings Online About Renuvion. Is It Safe?

In March 2022 the FDA issued a warning about the use of Renuvion for skin tightening as much of the way it was being advertised (for skin resurfacing or skin contraction) was considered off-label at the time, and the FDA was still gathering more information.  In July, the FDA issued an update, retracting their prior warning and Renuvion can be used subdermally for skin/soft tissue contraction.  In fact, Renuvion has gotten 2 new FDA approvals since then, including for skin contraction in the chin and neck area (the first device to ever receive approval for this!) as well as for skin resurfacing. As stated above, the complication rate is very low. Please click here if you would like more information directly from the FDA website.
