Dermal Fillers: Insider Tips from the Surgeons at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery

Choose an injector with significant experience with dermal fillers and in-depth knowledge of anatomy and facial aesthetics.

Ask about the “liquid facelift,” a combination of treatments that delivers comprehensive results with no surgery.

Ask about how cannulas for filler placement reduce discomfort, bruising, and improve safety.

Discuss what other non-surgical treatments like Botox®, chemical peels, or laser treatments synergize with dermal fillers for optimal outcome.

Ask if your injector keeps an emergency kit to reverse filler effects.

Remember to leave at least three to four weeks for filler injections before a big personal or work event.

What Are Hyaluronic Acid Fillers?

Why Do They Work?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide (sugar) that exists naturally in all humans and mammals. It is the main ingredient in Restylane and Juvederm products. It supports the skin by replacing the hyaluronic acid that has been lost with the normal aging process. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture from its surroundings. Most water-based lotions contain hyaluronic acid because it is so effective in re-hydrating skin. One gram of hyaluronic acid can hold three liters of water.

HA’s ability to attract water molecules results in softer, smoother skin and the filling of lines and wrinkles.

How HA Fillers Support Aging Skin in Ann Arbor, Michigan

With age, the amount of hyaluronic acid diminishes, and skin stops renewing itself as frequently. It’s the skin’s renewal process that combats sun damage, stress, and environmental toxins. The HA dermal filler stimulates some collagen production and reflates the face, creating fresh, younger-looking skin.

While patients can see some dermal fillers’ results immediately after injection, often the best is yet to come. Because HA stimulates collagen production and absorbs water, wrinkles continue to reduce over the coming weeks. When applied to several areas, a broad application of dermal fillers can create an overall lifted look.

The surgical facelift is the gold standard for facial rejuvenation for aged skin, but dermal fillers can get close to those results—without the need for surgery.

What’s Getting Dermal Fillers Like?

Where Hyaluronic Acid-Based Restylane and Juvederm Do Their Best Work

One of the first places we lose facial volume is under the eyes. Under-eye hollows convey age and weariness. Especially when accompanied by dark circles, under-eye hollows detract from a youthful appearance.

HA facial fillers like Restylane® re-fills the area, creating a soft, subtle fullness that helps to lessen dark circles and replace the volume associated with younger skin. One syringe contains less than one-fifth of a teaspoon of filler, but often a small amount can make a surprising difference. The other advantage of Restylane is that it moves with facial movements, helping the patient avoid any unnatural-looking facial expressions.

One of the most common areas for facial fillers is the nasolabial folds, or the folds around our mouth  Often as we age, we see the deep lines around our mouth as the first sign of aging.  Fillers can often soften these fold by 40 to 50% with repeat treatments.

Our male patients often have slightly different goals.  De-aging around their eyes and nasolabial folds are the most common areas.  HA fillers can be performed discreetly where the results are undetectable once the healing process has occurred.  Some exciting areas of fillers for men include jaw line contouring and chin augmentation. Ask your provider about some of the new areas we can augment using the product Voluma.

HA fillers help patients achieve the perfect pout–simply softer-looking, plump lips. Patients in their twenties and older round out their thin lips by using Restylane and Juvederm fillers to add volume. For older patients, we aim to enhance thin lips and also use dermal fillers to erase the lines around the mouth. Partnering with Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery means you can enjoy some of the best lip injections in Michigan.

While often overlooked, a weak chin diminishes attractive and balanced facial features. Dermal fillers add the volume needed to balance a strong nose or jaw. It can also diminish the look of submental fat.

High, prominent cheekbones are a central feature of classic beauty. Aging can cause the skin and underlying fat to descend, resulting in cheekbones that blend with the rest of the face, losing their sharp edges. Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery uses Juvederm Voluma® and Restylane products to replace lost facial volume at the cheekbones. Potent at filling hollows around cheeks and below the eyes, Voluma combats jowls and restores a more youthful facial shape.

Where the injectable Botox relaxes the muscles beneath the skin, HA fillers plump the “static” wrinkles created by the loss of skin elasticity.

Scars that appear as an absence of skin can be smoothed with the collagen-stimulating power hyaluronic acid provides. We may recommend microneedling in conjunction with dermal fillers to achieve smooth skin.

The cost of facial filler injections, including lip fillers, depends on a variety of factors, including the amount of filler used. The best way to find out the cost of your filler treatment is to schedule a one-on-one consultation.

Why Poly-L-Lactic Acid Collagen Stimulator?

Poly-L-lactic acid is an absorbable, temporary injectable that can stimulate collagen formation and restore lost facial volume. It is FDA-approved for correcting nasolabial folds and other facial lines and wrinkles.

Sculptra works with your body deep in the dermis to promote collagen regeneration to restore the skin’s underlying structure. The rebuilt collagen fibers will gradually help restore facial fullness and resolve unsightly folds and wrinkles.

The injectable is an excellent option to restore your youthful appearance without looking like you have had any work done. The number of treatments will depend on how much collagen you’ve lost. On average, each patient requires three sessions over a few months. Benefits last for up to two years.

Procedures that Complement Dermal Fillers to Create Optimal Results

The Liquid Facelift

A liquid facelift is a non-surgical option for facial rejuventation that combines Botox with Restylane or Juvederm. Application of Botox and fillers combats both “dynamic” wrinkles (that result from muscles flexing under the skin) and “static” wrinkles (caused by skin laxity). Those youthful contours reappear most convincingly when all types of wrinkles are addressed.

Chemical Peel

Adding volume isn’t the only way to chase years from your face. A chemical peel is an option for those with age spots looking to even out skin tone. This procedure uses a chemical solution to remove the top layers of skin, revealing smoother, younger skin beneath. Visit us for a consultation to determine if you’re a good candidate for this treatment.

IPL Photofacial

Intense Pulsed Light therapy minimizes age spots, sun damage, and redness. Flashes of concentrated light interact with brown and red pigments, damaging them. The body then metabolizes the dead skin cells. The heat from the IPL laser restores uniform tone and smooth texture.

Ideal Candidates for Dermal Fillers

  • Those looking to look younger without undergoing surgery
  • People with deep laugh and “marionette” lines, under-eye hollows
  • Men and women looking to contour cheekbones or chin in a more flattering way
  • People with “static” wrinkles caused by loss of skin elasticity rather than “dynamic” wrinkles caused by repetitive motion of muscles under the skin (Botox tackles these)
  • Men and women who want to restore youthful fullness to their hands

Dermal Fillers FAQ

The results of filler are instant. You will leave your treatment with visible improvement of your lines and wrinkles. You should avoid massaging the treated areas and refrain from exercise until the next day to prevent worsening swelling and bruising.

Ideal candidates are patients with focal areas of concern who are interested in nonsurgical options for rejuvenating the areas and improving their appearance.

You can return to work the day of your injection treatments. There is a risk for bruising and swelling, but this can be covered up with makeup as needed. Patients can also ice the area to reduce any swelling.

Juvederm and Restylane are both FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers. Each brand consists of multiple different products indicated for filling various regions of the face. The biggest difference between the two is their texture. Restylane is granular and more cohesive, while Juvederm has a smoother texture.

Aftercare is minimal. Patients who get filler to their hands should avoid strenuous activity for a day. They may experience minor bruising or swelling, but this typically resolves quickly.

The cost of your lip fillers in Michigan (like the cost of all facial fillers) depends on the amount of filler used and other factors. The best way to see what your treatment will cost is to visit Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery for a personalized consultation.
