Aging is inevitable, but the signs of it don’t have to be. If you are ready to present a younger, rejuvenated, and refreshed appearance to the world, consider a facelift. At our Michigan practice, we design a customized facelift procedure to deliver the greatest possible improvement for each patient. This involves tightening sagging facial or neck skin and the underlying muscles so you can lose the loose look that makes you come across as tired or old.
Many patients benefit from different variations on this procedure, including a neck lift, mini facelift, or full facelift. Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Pramit Malhotra is board certified and has the experience and skill to help you choose which procedure will give you the most attractive results based on your current facial contours, skin laxity, and overall goals.
Why Choose a Facelift?
A youthful face has tight skin that sits in place over a sturdy support structure. Over time, the elements that allow for this begin to break down: Skin loses collagen and elastin, gravity pulls tissues downward, and well-defined facial lines are obscured. This can give your face a rundown look, or even cause the formation of wobbly jowls.
Since skin that has lost its collagen and elastin is no longer as supportive or pliant as it used to be, there are two primary ways to reclaim a supple firmness. One is to use dermal fillers to create a temporary lift by adding volume where it is needed. The other is to physically lift the skin into a more youthful position by tightening it, shaping the tissues and muscles beneath, and eliminating any redundant loose tissue.
At the hands of a qualified surgeon, facelift results are typically long lasting and natural looking. Remember that there is no “one size fits all” approach to a facelift, so it is important to choose a doctor who will take your unique anatomy and desires into account when planning and completing your procedure.
Selecting Your Facelift Surgeon
Many people who come to our practice want a little more than a mini facelift but not quite a full facelift. In most of our Michigan procedures (about 80%), we can extend the mini lift incision to treat both the face and the neck.
Talk to your surgeon about all anesthesia options for your facelift procedure. Some can be done in the office under local anesthesia (like the dentist’s injections), conscious sedation, or full anesthesia. Often these options allow a facelift procedure to fit into many different budgets, which our Michigan patients appreciate.
When people think of facelifts, they think of Hollywood celebrities and $25,000 price tags. In reality, most procedures range from $5,000 to $11,000, including all fees. Choose a surgeon that specializes in facelift surgery, like Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Malhotra. Often surgeons with facial plastic surgery backgrounds perform these procedures with improved outcomes and added finesse. The key is in working with a doctor who has an artistic eye in addition to extensive medical experience, creating the best mix of safety during the procedure, minimal risks and side effects, and an optimal aesthetic outcome. In-depth understanding of facial anatomy is a must, but facelift patients should also seek a connection with their surgeon, as the process involves a great deal of trust and understanding. Personality compatibility is important and should be considered.

Benefits of Facelift in Michigan
Facelift procedures at Dr. Malhotra’s Michigan practice often involve a neck lift or chin and cheek liposuction for more sculpted facial contours. Common benefits of a facelift procedure include the following:
- Removal of excess fat and skin
- Tightening of the underlying facial muscles
- Smoothing of loose skin on the face and neck
Your surgeon can employ several different facelift techniques to help you maximize your aesthetic outcome while minimizing facelift cost and recovery time. Patients should discuss with their physician which technique will best suit their needs and budget.
Insider Tips for Facelift Surgery in Michigan
For women and men considering a facelift, see these insider tips from Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Pramit Malhotra:
- This procedure can be done under local anesthesia, like at the dentist, but a better option is to use a little sedation to make you sleepy.
- Ask your doctor about tumescent anesthesia for your facelift. This technique dramatically reduces bruising, pain, and swelling. Our Michigan patients have very little downtime using this technique.
- Avoid the “wind tunnel” look by having a SMAS facelift in addition to skin tightening. This involves tightening the tissue below the skin, resulting in a natural, refreshed look.
- You can have a smaller, mini facelift procedure that fits your budget and downtime.
- Avoid smoking in the days before and after your surgery, as cigarettes and other nicotine products can restrict blood flow and diminish your capacity for healing.
Best Candidates for Facelift Surgery
The best candidates for a facelift include any adult from Michigan or out of town who would like to correct the following:
- Saggy, loose skin around the neck
- Jowls around the neck and lower part of the face
- Excess skin or fat on the lower portions of the face
- Wrinkles, particularly on the lower part of the face
- Droopy appearance to the cheek area
Facelift candidates should also be in good health, both mentally and physically. Maintaining a stable weight is important to preserving the long-term effects of a facelift, so talk to Dr. Malhotra if you anticipate any significant change, whether weight loss or gain may be in your future.
General Facelift Procedure
The standard procedure for a facelift at our Michigan practice commonly involves making incisions inside the hairline, following the contour in front of the ear, and continuing under the earlobe to the backside of the ear. This is to disguise any faint lines that may remain once the healing process is complete.
The incisions allow Dr. Malhotra access to the tissues underneath the skin, which experience a major portion of the tightening. He will sculpt and reposition fat as necessary, then move the skin into place so it reveals the new, sleek contours. The excess can then be trimmed, with the remaining skin gently laid into position without tension.
If the neck has an aging appearance, an additional incision is made in the chin crease, and liposuction, along with muscle tightening, is performed.
The key to minimal scarring is attention to detail at the time of closure, so great care is taken to use a sophisticated, meticulously developed technique designed to yield superb results. We close all skin in two layers: one layer of support and one layer of very fine sutures to reduce the chance of scarring. Also, remember that any minimal scars are hidden by hair and in natural folds and creases on the face.
With proper care and attention, you can enjoy the results of a facelift for years, with no one realizing that your youthful looks are the result of surgery.
Facelift Recovery Process
One day after surgery we remove your bandage. Sutures are removed six to eight days after surgery. Typically, bruising is not very prevalent in the face due to the tumescent anesthesia technique, although bruising in the neck can occur. People who can work from home usually take two to three days off, but be sure to give yourself plenty of time to rest and recuperate. Inadequate sleep and stress are two significant culprits in prematurely aging skin. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is a major culprit, so wear sunscreen or other protection when going outside, even on cloudy days.
It is important to note that a facelift does not stop the face from aging. A patient who receives a lift from Dr. Malhotra will typically look years younger, and the effects of time, the elements, and gravity will continue to work from this new starting point. Think of a facelift as a sort of “reset” button for your face. That said, there are many treatments and procedures that can be used to maintain a newly youthful appearance.
Treatments to Complement a Facelift
A facelift may involve the surgical removal of some excess facial fat, but it is not the only option for reducing that stubborn pocket that makes a double chin. CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical device that selectively kills fat cells by cooling them to specific temperatures. The targeted fat naturally leaves the body, slimming down the under-chin area. In some cases, this can be enough to provide sleeker contours, but stretched-out skin may fail to tighten back into place. In this case, a facelift can complete the aesthetic transformation.
On the other end of the spectrum, Ultherapy does not remove fat, but does tighten loose skin using ultrasound energy. Nothing but a facelift can deliver the results of a facelift, but Ultherapy is a popular option for people who want some lift without surgery.
While a facelift can reduce the appearance of some deep creases as it tightens skin, it does not address fine lines, wrinkles, or other cosmetic issues associated with skin tone and texture.
As mentioned above, Juvederm Voluma provides a lifting effect on the face, but other dermal fillers are better suited for reducing the appearance of marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and various wrinkles. These injectables can enhance the youthful effects of a facelift.
BOTOX is another wrinkle-smoothing option, blocking signals to key muscles that reveal lines on the forehead and to the side of either eye (known as crow’s feet). When combined with a surgery on the lower half of the face, this treatment creates an overall look that eliminates years from a person’s appearance.
Whatever you choose, whether it’s a single temporary procedure, a full facelift, or some combination of the above, know that Dr. Pramit Malhotra and the Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery team work on a results-based approach that considers your own aesthetic goals and delivers accordingly. What works best for one patient might not be ideal for another, so the key is building a relationship and truly understanding what each person wants and how to help them achieve their desired look.
