Ultherapy: Insider Tips from the Surgeons at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery

Not all non-surgical treatments are comparable. When you’re considering non-surgical rejuvenation, look for treatments that are FDA-cleared and that offer proven benefits, like Ultherapy.

Ultherapy can complement the results of surgical treatments. Our patients use this treatment to extend the results of their facelift procedures and to enhance the results of other facial rejuvenation treatments, including eyelid surgery.

There are many options to make Ultherapy a more comfortable treatment experience. Ask your provider about pain control options, such as nitrous oxide or relaxing medications.

What Is Ultherapy?

Ultherapy is an FDA-cleared treatment that uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin without surgery. It is the only non-invasive treatment of its kind.

How does this treatment work? The specialized device delivers focused ultrasound energy to the deep tissues under the skin, stimulating collagen production. Collagen keeps the skin youthful and healthy. As new collagen forms, wrinkles smooth, skin quality improves, and sagging tissues lift and tighten.

Doctors have long used ultrasound energy for visualizing areas underneath the skin. Ultherapy uses this visualization to further enhance treatment results. As we apply the ultrasound energy, we can see what areas we are treating and can pinpoint treatment locations to ensure maximum results and safety. The Ultherapy device delivers energy directly to the most-needed places.

What to Expect from a Michigan Ultherapy Treatment

At Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery, our goal is always a comfortable and informed treatment experience. We’ll help you prepare for your procedure, so you know what to expect beforehand.

Do you have questions? We’re here for you. We welcome questions about your treatment.

Before Ultherapy

Before your treatment, you’ll meet with one of our skilled aestheticians to discuss Ultherapy and make sure the procedure is right for you. If we believe another option will be a better fit, we may recommend an alternative instead and may have you speak with one of our plastic surgeons about surgical options or other nonsurgical treatments.

Preparing for treatment is easy:

  • You won’t need any special skin preparation.
  • We may recommend using over-the-counter or prescription medication before treatment.

We’ll provide detailed instructions you can follow leading up to the day of your appointment.

During Ultherapy

Kick back and relax during your treatment. Our experienced providers will walk you through the process, and are ready to assist at any time during your appointment.

  • First, we clean the treatment area and apply ultrasound gel.
  • Next, we move the treatment probe around the skin to find the best treatment areas. The probe is smooth and glides over the skin. If you’re received an ultrasound previously, this stage should feel very similar.
  • Then, we apply focused ultrasound energy. Most patients feel an energetic sensation as the energy penetrates the deep layers of the skin.
  • After having all desired areas treated, your practitioner will remove the ultrasound gel and clear you to resume your regular activities.

A typical treatment for the face and neck takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. We can treat the chest area in about 30 minutes.

After Ultherapy

One of the most significant benefits of Ultherapy is the ability to get back to life immediately. At first, the skin may be red and flushed. These side effects fade quickly, usually within a few hours. Some patients experience tenderness, tingling, and swelling and may have mild bruising.

  • Return to work and other activities right after treatment.
  • No required downtime.
  • No post-treatment activity restrictions.
  • You may resume wearing makeup immediately.
  • Minimal discomfort.

If you have any questions or concerns during recovery, let us know.

Keep Your Results at Their Best

Ultherapy offers long-lasting results. Patients enjoy a refreshed, younger-looking appearance after treatment. A medical grade skin care routine directed by an aesthetician will also help you optimize and maintain your results and improve the appearance of your skin.

Ultherapy FAQs

Non-surgical treatments are excellent alternatives to more invasive surgeries, but they aren’t replacements. Results from Ultherapy are more subtle than surgical facelift results. We recommend this treatment for patients who are unable or unwilling to undergo surgery. This treatment can also extend the results from a surgical procedure.

Some patients experience discomfort from having the ultrasound energy applied to the skin. There are multiple options to reduce any pain associated with the treatment. At Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery, we offer nitrous oxide for patients and can also discuss other alternatives, such as pain medication, to help make the treatment as comfortable as possible. If you’re concerned, let us know, and we will create a pain control plan with you.

Your plastic surgeon will work with you to determine how many sessions you need. Most patients experience their desired result with only treatment. Occasional maintenance can extend your results.

Pairing Ultherapy with other non-surgical treatments can enhance your results. We love combining this treatment with Botox® and dermal fillers. Ask your surgeon to recommend other complementary treatments.

It takes time for new collagen to grow after treatment. Most patients see good results within two to three months of their initial treatment.
