FUE Hair Transplants
FUE, short for follicular unit extraction, is a type of hair transplantation that uses singular hair follicles that are 1mm or less for transplantation. FUE is the most advanced option for hair restoration and provides superior results. Although Dr. Malhotra is highly experienced using many methods for hair transplantation, FUE is his preferred technique and he does not perform the old strip procedures.
Benefits of FUE Hair Transplantation in Michigan
FUE is now the most common type of procedure used for hair restoration in the United States. For most patients, FUE is superior to FUT, also called the strip method. In FUT, the doctor removes a strip of hair from the scalp from which to harvest the hair follicles for transplant to the areas of hair loss. This procedure can leave a scar, making it difficult for many (particularly men) to wear their hair very short. Because the FUE process harvests just a few hair follicles at a time from the donor area (the lower back of the head which is genetically programmed for continual growth), the tiny scars are close to imperceptible.
The benefits of FUE for hair transplantation include:
With FUE transplantation, individual follicles are extracted, leaving little telltale scar at the back of the head.
With no linear scar to hide, you’ve got flexibility for hairstyles. Our patients can wear their hair long or short, sporting many popular hairstyles.
Traditional strip method (FUT) hair transplantation requires an extended recovery period. With FUE, patients are back to work in just a few days with few activity restrictions.
For the first day or two, you may experience some tenderness or mild discomfort. We tell our patients to use Tylenol or Tylenol with codeine for the first 24-48 hours.
Patients with insufficient hair for transplantation on the lower scalp may be able to use hair from other areas of the body.
FUE is often the best method for hair transplantation currently available. We are delighted to be the premier site for this advanced hair restoration option for men and women living in Michigan.
Your FUE Hair Transplant Experience
FUE is the most cutting edge method for hair transplantation currently available and Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery ensures that our patients achieve the best possible results from their procedures.
3 FUE Devices– We use three specialty FUE devices to harvest high-quality grafts for your procedure. Dr. Malhotra and our hair transplantation team are extensively trained to identify and extract the best available donor and destination sites. We have a large selection of shapes and sizes of harvest punches that allows us to customize the procedure to your graft size, length, and scalp hardness.
Careful Graft Harvest- Some areas of the scalp produce better grafts than other areas. Our hair transplant team carefully choses extraction areas to ensure your hair transplantation results last as long as possible.
Hypothermasol Solution- As hair follicles are extracted, they are placed into a hypothermasol solution, where they are stored until transplantation. This solution feeds the grafts, keeping them healthy until they are ready for placement.

Hair loss is most common in men, but millions of women are affected too.
- 30 million women in the U.S. have female pattern hair loss, the most common type of hair loss in women.
- 50% of all women will experience noticeable hair loss at some point during their lives.
- Hair loss is most common in women over 40, have recently had a baby, or women with medical conditions that cause hair loss.
- Pulled-tight hairstyles can also cause thinning or loss of hair.
While hair loss almost always causes an emotional impact, our female patients often report a heavy emotional toll caused by this condition. Treating female hair loss helps our patients to feel comfortable and confident in their appearance again.
Treatment Options for Female Hair Loss
Hair transplantation is one of the most effective options for treating female hair loss. At Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery, we used advanced FUE techniques to restore a full and feminine hairline. Dr. Malhotra will explain your options during your female hair restoration consultation.
Hair Treatment Recovery
Current hair restoration techniques significantly reduce the downtime and discomfort after hair transplantation. Here’s what to expect from your recovery after hair transplantation.
- Mild Discomfort for 1-2 Days- Most patients use Tylenol to control discomfort during the first 24-48 hours after surgery.
- Rash-Like Appearance- Redness is common, both in the extraction and recipient sites. At first, this redness will look similar to a rash. Small pin-sized scabs will appear after a day or two.
- Minimal Activity Restrictions- Patients can return to most activities quickly. Within a week of treatment, patients resume gentle washing of the scalp.
- Full Results in 15 Months- You’ll start to see hair growth at 3-4 months post-treatment. By 5-6 months, patients notice considerable growth. Results continue to improve for up to 15 months after treatment.
