Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty both change the appearance of the nose, but they do so differently. Surgical rhinoplasty removes tissue and reshapes bone and cartilage. A non-surgical nasal correction uses fillers to enhance the contours of the nose. Discover the differences between these two procedures:

Surgical rhinoplasty can reduce the size of the nose by removing bone, skin, and tissue. A non-surgical procedure can only add to the nose.

Surgical rhinoplasty requires downtime and a recovery period. This can range from a few days for a simple tweak to several weeks for a more extensive procedure. Most patients require no downtime after treatment with fillers.

Results are permanent for a surgical rhinoplasty. After a non-surgical treatment, results will fade unless patients come in occasionally for follow-up injections. However, some collagen is left behind with each injection.

The Procedure: What to Expect During a Liquid Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is performed in our office as an outpatient procedure. A typical treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.

A topical anesthetic can be used, if desired. If we’re using an anesthetic, it will be applied to the nose several minutes before your injections as it takes time to start working. Many of our fillers contain lidocaine to gently numb the treated area and enhance your comfort throughout the procedure. And, most patients describe the injections as much more tolerable than they anticipated.

Your provider will carefully examine your nose, pinpointing the locations for each injection and choosing the best for each area. A series of small injections placed into and around the nose. In some cases, Dr. Malhotra will use a cannula to the filler.

Patients can drive themselves to and from the procedure and are able to return home immediately after treatment.

Recovery After a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery

  • No downtime necessary after a non-surgical rhinoplasty. Avoid exercising until the day after treatment.
  • Redness, bruising, and swelling are possible after treatment. These side effects usually resolve within a week.
  • Use ice packs and over the counter medications to control any discomfort after your procedure.
  • Arnica montana gel applied to bruising may speed the healing process.
  • Do not rub or massage the nose during healing. Rubbing may dislodge or reposition the fillers, creating an uneven result.
  • Makeup can be applied the day after treatment to reduce the appearance of bruising or swelling. Apply cosmetics with a gentle touch, being careful to avoid excessive rubbing or massage to the nose.

We’ll provide detailed recovery instructions. If you have questions or concerns during recovery, contact our office immediately.

Maintaining Your Results

Results are temporary after a non-surgical nose job and will begin to fade after several months. If you want to maintain your enhanced nasal shape, reinjection with dermal fillers is needed. Most of our non-surgical rhinoplasty patients come in every six to twelve months for injections. Your treatment schedule will depend on the fillers used, your body’s response to treatment, and the areas treated.

Non-Surgical Nose Jobs FAQs

Results from a non-surgical rhinoplasty usually last six to twelve months.

Many patients experience minimal pain and discomfort after a non-surgical nose job. This treatment is much less invasive than surgery and therefore, less painful. To minimize discomfort, we can use a topical anesthetic during treatment. Post-treatment discomfort is usually managed using cold compresses and over the counter pain medications.

While surgical rhinoplasty can correct both functional and cosmetic issues, a non-surgical rhinoplasty focuses on looks. It does not correct a deviated septum, enlarged nasal turbinates, blocked airway, or other functional issues. If you have breathing problems, consider a surgical rhinoplasty instead.

Surgical rhinoplasty remains the gold standard in nasal correction. Choose a surgical procedure if you have breathing issues or desire a permanent correction. Non-surgical treatment is best for those patients that want or need to avoid surgery.

The cost for a liquid nose job depends on the number of syringes needed to achieve the desired result.  We’ll provide a customized estimate during your appointment. Call Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery to schedule your consultation with Dr. Malhotra, our surgical and non-surgical rhinoplasty specialist.

Following your non-surgical nose job, you should avoid strenuous activities, including exercise, for approximately 24 to 48 hours. The goal is to avoid skin irritation while your fillers settle into the correct place.

Generally, there is no downtime associated with injectable treatments. After your non-surgical nose job, you may experience slight swelling or bruising; however, these effects should settle within a few hours to days.

Since non-surgical nose jobs are customizable, the number of filler or Botox units required for non-surgical rhinoplasty depends on your unique needs.

While this injectable treatment has no downtime, we ask you to steer clear of some activities afterward. For at least 24 hours, don’t exercise. Please don’t touch, rub, or put excessive pressure on the targeted areas for a few days. That includes getting a facial or wearing eyewear like glasses or sunglasses.

Overall, the risks from injectable treatments are minimal when performed by highly trained plastic surgeons. Before your treatment, discuss these with your provider.

Side effects from a non-surgical rhinoplasty are relatively minor and should resolve within a few days to a week. They may include:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Bruising
  • Nausea
  • Headache

You can have this procedure reversed if you find yourself unsatisfied with the results for any reason. Most dermal fillers used for non-surgical rhinoplasty consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring compound in the body; a compound called hyaluronidase dissolves it.

After your non-surgical nose job, you’ll need to avoid sleeping on your back or stomach for at least five days. Instead, lay on your back with your head slightly elevated.

Following your nose filler procedure, you should be careful about touching your nose for at least six hours.

After a non-surgical rhinoplasty, the fillers used will settle in one to two weeks. Be sure to limit your movements during this time to ensure optimal results.

Depending on your goals, non-surgical rhinoplasty can change many facets of your nose. While this procedure can add volume to a small nose, it cannot make a larger nose smaller. The aim of non-surgical nose jobs is to make your nose look balanced and proportional with the rest of your face. Your plastic surgeon may also recommend procedures to modify your lips, chin, cheeks, or other facial features to further enhance these effects.
