What Is Labiaplasty and Why Would You Need It?

Sexual health and confidence are important parts of a healthy life. And sometimes your sexual health needs some support. Dr. Tiffany Ballard offers labiaplasty, a procedure to reshape and rejuvenate the labia at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery.

Understanding the Female Genitalia

The labia are the soft, fleshy lips that surround the vagina. The appearance of a woman’s labia is as unique as fingerprints – every woman looks a little different down there.

There are two sets of labia. The labia minora, the smaller vaginal lips that protect the clitoris and other internal female genitalia. The labia majora are the outermost lips. They are larger and often covered in hair; they protect the labia minora and the vagina.

In many women, the labia minora are fully covered by the labia majora. Age, childbirth, and other factors can stretch these delicate tissues, causing them to protrude and become visible outside of the outer labia. Enlarged or stretched-out labia can cause discomfort during sex and other activities and embarrassment.

What Is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a procedure to reshape the labia. A small amount of tissue is removed from the labia (either by trimming the labia or removing a small wedge and suturing the remaining tissues together) to create a more attractive, balanced labia. Dr. Ballard’s goal when performing the procedure is to create a balanced and attractive labia minor that does not extend past the outer lips of the labia.

Patients can experience many benefits after labiaplasty including increased comfort during sex or exercise and an improvement to the appearance of the labia.

Labiaplasty only improves the size and shape of the labia minora. It will not tighten the vagina.

Do I Need Labiaplasty?

The decision to pursue cosmetic surgery is a personal one. Dr. Ballard can help you explore the benefits of the procedure, but ultimately, the decision is yours. If you’re bothered by the appearance of your labia, come in for a consultation and explore the procedure in more depth. A better understanding of labiaplasty can help you to make an informed decision about the procedure.

You may benefit from labiaplasty if:

  • You experience discomfort or pain when wearing certain clothing styles due to an enlarged labia
  • Rubbing or chafing in your feminine areas makes exercise uncomfortable
  • You are embarrassed or disappointed by the appearance of your labia
  • Wearing a tampon or menstrual cup is uncomfortable due to enlarged labia
  • The labia are unbalanced or asymmetrical

Labiaplasty is a safe and effective option for most women. Provided you’re in good health, have realistic expectations, and do not smoke, labiaplasty may be the procedure you’re seeking.
